What a smart lock actually does
A smart lock is just a deadbolt or lever that opens without a metal key. Most use a keypad where you punch in a code. Some read your fingerprint. Some open from an app on your phone or unlock on their own when you walk up. A lot of them do all of that and still take a regular key as a backup, which is the setup we usually recommend so you're never stuck outside if a battery dies.
The big draw is that you stop handing out keys. Give the dog walker, the cleaner, or your in-laws their own code, then change it whenever you want. If you rent out a room near CSU Channel Islands or do short-term stays in Camarillo, you can set a code that only works during someone's visit. And you get a log of who unlocked the door and when.
When people call us about keyless entry
Plenty of folks call after locking themselves out one too many times, or because they're tired of hiding a spare key where any burglar already knows to look. Parents like that kids can let themselves in after school without carrying a key that gets lost. We also hear from people who just moved into a place in Newbury Park or Westlake Village and want to stop wondering who else has a key to the old locks.
Commercial spots call too — small offices and shops that need a few employees to have access without cutting a dozen keys, and want to shut off a code the day someone leaves. Whatever the reason, we'll talk through whether a keypad, a fingerprint reader, or a phone-based lock makes the most sense for your door and how you live.
What CLS does on the job
We start with a free estimate. We look at your door, your existing deadbolt, and how the door sits in the frame, because a smart lock won't work right on a door that's sagging or has a worn-out strike. If something needs adjusting first, we'll tell you straight. Then we install the lock, set up your codes, connect it to your phone or wifi if it's that kind of lock, and test it a bunch of times so we know it latches every time.
Before we pack up, we show you how to add and delete codes yourself, swap the batteries, and use the key backup if you've got one. If you already bought a lock online and just need it put on right, we can do that too — we work with the major brands and we'll be honest if the one you picked isn't a good match for your door.
